A DEOEC Belgyógyászati Intézet tanszékesítése során a III. Sz. Belgyógyászati Klinika területén 2001. július 1-én alakult meg a nem független Reumatológiai Tanszék, mely 2008. június 1-től, még mindig a Belgyógyászati Intézet részeként, de a III. sz. Belklinikától függetlenül, szakmailag és gazdaságilag önálló tanszékként működik. A klinikán már az 1970-es vége óta, igaz nem tanszéki formában, zajlik a reumatológiai, elsősorban arthritises betegek ellátása, és a Reumatológia tantárgy oktatása néhány órában, a belgyógyászatba ágyazva, a III. évfolyam 2. félévében. A reumatológiai betegellátás és oktatás dr. Szegedi Gyula professzor és munkatársai, először dr. Tamási László főorvos, majd dr. Surányi Péter főorvos keze nyomán fejlődött. A tanszékvezető 1994-ben vette át a gondozott beteganyagot és az oktatásszervezést, majd 2001, a Tanszék megalakulása óta a betegellátás, oktatás és kutatás területén is regionális centrumként működünk.
